Pain Pumps

A pain pump delivers medication directly to the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord.  Also called an intrathecal pump, these are useful for patients who live with severe, chronic pain or spasticity that we are unable to control through alternative methods.

Our practice provides surgical services for implant and repair, if necessary, of baclofen spinal infusion pumps manufactured by Medtronic.

New Pump

Your physician may refer you to Dr. Burke for placement of an intrathecal pump if your medication is no longer working by other means.

A pump may be appropriate for patients with medical conditions that cause severe, chronic pain or spasticity or if they are unable to tolerate oral medication.

Pump Replacement

If you have an existing intrathecal pump that is in need of replacement, Dr. Burke is able to perform this procedure.

Replacement does require an office visit to establish care with Dr. Burke, and then replacement can be scheduled.

Pumps are placed, and replaced, at Munson Medical Center with Dr. Burke and Medtronic.

If you have questions

Please contact our office or have your provider send a referral for replacement.

Relief

Powerful relief can be achieved with a much lower dose than with oral doses or injections*

Side Effects

Using a pump may help reduce medication side effects which may be common with oral medication use*

Removable

Can be removed if you no longer need or want the pump

Pain Control

Infusing medication directly into the intrathecal space helps control pain and abnormal muscle contractions (spasticity) rather than waiting for oral medications to take effect*

Cancer Related Pain

Studies show that patients with cancer-related pain found greater pain relief with intrathecal pumps as well as more manageable side effects over oral medications*
